The triangle of Exposure

Exposure Triangle

In digital photography, exposure is the unit of measurement for the total amount of light permitted to reach the electronic sensor during the process of taking a photograph. The two main controls our digital camera uses to control exposure are the shutter speed and aperture.

I think of a perfect exposure as an equilateral triangle – all the angles are equal, all the sides are equal. Now if I change just one part of that exposure or triangle, it is no longer equilateral or perfect so I will need to change another point of the exposure or triangle an equal but opposite amount to make that triangle and therefore the exposure is perfect again.

Screen Shot 2018-10-14 at 21.11.39We had a session for aperture with Becky, where we had some time to play with aperture and 70 – 200 mm lens. I used a 50mm lens to take both the images. The first image (the one on the left) is with shallow depth of field and the second is with a wide depth of field. I felt really hard figuring out to the wide depth of field, that is why the image is quite blurry.

This gave me a basic understanding of the importance of the exposure triangle, aperture and depth of field
